I don't post much, so bear with me.
Way back in 1959-60, when I was a senior in high school, I had a
1932 Ford three-window coupe--the "Little Deuce Coupe" of The Beachboys'
hit from the Sixties. While it was the hottest thing on four tires when
it came out in 1932 (John Dillanger supposedly wrote a letter to Henry
Ford praising the car's ability to get away fast), by the late '50's it
was over 27 years old and, well, not quite up to the competition at the
stop lights on Lake Street in Mpls on Saturday night.
So I put in a '55 Ford OHV V-8, kept the wire rims, and had a
"sleeper." It was, to be sure, quick to get going from a stoplight.
So what, you ask?
Well, the parallels to what I read folks on this list doing to their
S900's make me think that we're a bunch of misplaced street rodders.
For instance:
"I pulled that 65 HP (220 MHz) flathead V8 (604e) engine (processor)
and replaced it with a 195 HP (400 MHz) Chevy (Powerlogix) OHV V8 (G4
ZIF). Then I supercharged (overclocked) that puppy (puppy) and squeezed
235 (475) HP (MHz) out of it. Did it scream! (scream!). Dropped my
quarter mile (Gausian blur) times by 40%. No stinkin' Chevy 283
(Pentium 4) is going to beat me!"
We spend hours and dollars upgrading engines (processors),
transmissions (SCSI or ATA cards), mechanical brake systems (hard
drives), and on and on, plus hours getting the final hodge-podge to
work. And truth be told, a stock '59 Chevy could beat my beloved Deuce
Coupe.
But, my gawd, it was fun. 0-30 in seconds--just like watching the
MacBench scores come in after installing the latest 133 ATA drive. Same
fun, same rush, same testosterone spike (OK, Nancy, Sybil, and
Jacqueline excepted)--and the knowledge that "Hey, I did it!" An
outdated but extremely cool bit of machinery keeps running.
You can still buy a new 1932 Ford 3-window coupe, 72 years after it
was first manufactured: fiberglass body, frame by the Deuce Factory,
running gear adapted from current production autos. Will the S900 last
as long?
All we need now is for Jeff Walther and Kennedy Brandt to pen the
words and tune for The Beachboys's next great hit: "Little S900."
Best wishes,
Dean
