I would put an ATA66 PCI card in it and use the larger, less expensive IDE drives. Be sure to flash the card to the latest upgrade when installed. The ATA100 and ATA133 cards aren't as useful in our machines unless you specifically wish to edit video. The ATA66 would also allow use of an IDE CD burner. As far as OS, Will S. runs Panther on his J700. Decide what you wish to run(software) then upgrade accordingly. Long live Supermacs. Get on the www.macsales email clearance list. They were selling 128MB RAM for the J700 for $19.50ea a few weeks ago. Paul
