Alan,

I'm beginning to feel some relief with "POPmonitor"
<http://www.vechtwijk.nl/dev/popmonitor/>. It takes a little bit of work to
set up the trusted, blocked, flagged, and filtered lists, but has saved me
*weeks* of time, especially when I am travelling and do not have access to a
broadband connection :(

One situation that this excellent shareware handles well is when a mailing
list gets stuck in a loop and starts spewing duplicate messages
uncontroably. It is a very simple matter to set up a filter to automatically
delete such messages on the server before they are downloaded without
increasing the already over burdened traffic on the servers involved. [I
recently had one spit out over 3,000 error messages before the List Mom was
able to get it under control--imagine trying to download and delete those
manually!]

According to the web site, versions are available for both Mac OS 9 and OS
X.

HTH,

paul
