Thank you so much for your thought!

Before I picked up your email, it came across my mind as well, so I fished
out a pair of matched EDO RAM, each 32MB, put them in, and lo and behold, it
started up as smoothly as could be. After a few subsequent cold starts I got
curious, so I put the two pieces of matched 64MB FPM back in, and guess
what: no problem either, and that's been a few cold starts since then...
some RAM voodoo perhaps, but I should really be looking for some 64MB EDO,
even though I have a bag of them but they are just too small in size, and
getting them in this part of the world is not going to be easy.

Most of the Matrox Millennium II "Mistral", in both 4MB and the rare 8MB
on-board VRAM versions, are rarely found as Mac originals, even though they
are physically identical to the very common PC versions (with one proviso),
a lot of which were supplied as OEM to PC assemblers like Compaq and
Hewlett-Packard. If the flash ROM on the card is suitable for conversion,
firmware are still avaliable from Matrox for converting them to become the
Mac version, identical to the rare retail ones, and you can also get the
drivers (Control Panels and Extensions) for it. This also applies to the
Millennium "Storm" as well, and I have had no trouble converting OEM ones
supplied to Compaq and HP to become fully-fledged Mac versions.

Thank you again Will, I might have to start another wild goose chase for
more RAM and perhaps even dispose of my stash of smaller EDO and the pair of
64MB FPM!

All the best,

Sam.
