Why won't Safari play Flash movies embedded as objects in web pages?

This can be very frustrating when the 'splash' page (index.html) of a major
commercial website consists solely of an embedded movie without any HTML
links. It means you are barred from entering the site! Viewing the HTML
source is pointless unless the author has commented out a link.

I am currently running my S900/G3/400MHz/784MB under Jag (10.2.8) with
Safari (1.0.2 v. 85.7) and QuickTime Plug-in (6.5.1), which supposedly
handles Flash as follows:

MIME Type: application/x-shockwave-flash
Description: Flash file
Extensions: swf

However, all I get is the broken QuickTime logo.

According to the Safari 'Installed Plugins' document, I also have the
following plugin installed, but it doesn't ever seem to kick in:

Shockwave Flash
Shockwave Flash 6.0 r79 from file Shockwave Flash NP-PPC.

MIME Type: application/x-shockwave-flash
 Description: Shockwave Flash
 Extensions: swf

Does anyone have a solution?
