Will, excellent info, thanks very much. This ZIF sounds like the go for me
as well. Just one more question before I take the plunge and purchase it.
Although I don't own a copy yet, any idea how this upgrade goes with running
the iLife applications?
Cheers again, Pete
Ok just for the quest of the answer I installed iDVD 4.0 yesterday evening. I'd previously tried iDVD 3.x and gave up on it. Was able to install 3.x version but wouldn't open with the G3 even using a hack I'd found.
iDVD 4 i'd heard would install and open on any machine with a G4 CPU. I'd also read you could even use it to make a project which you could later transfer to a machine that could burn it. Ok install went good opens with message something to the effect of this machine doesn't seem to have a usable DVD for burning. Seem to work fine and I've heard you can save an iDVD project and perhaps use Toast 6 to burn the project with. I have a Pioneer A05/105 DVD RW drive. It is the same as many Apple Superdrives but I have it in a firewire box as the Acard ATA 66 PCI card I have will let me use it as a reader the burning part gives hardware errors. In the firewire box it works fine with iTunes, the built into OSX disk burner and Toast. Apple system profiler sees it as an Apple SuperDrive!
Off I go to:
http://www.kentidwell.com/idvd4/#faq_02
Download a very small file follow directions carefully and iDVD 4 (updated to 4.0.1 by Software update) now lets me chose an external DVD burner to burn an iDVD project to DVD or make a disk image file which can be burned with Toast 6!
Most any DVD burner that works with itunes and or disk burner should work. This includes the many Pioneer DVD burners and a few other brands Apple has used as Superdrives over the last few years and perhaps some others.
I already know iMovie works as do the other iLife apps. Both iDVD and iMovie I believe have the limits of needing either DV or QT (movie) formated files to work with. QT Pro can convert them put it always took longer tehn I wanted to wait for with the G3 it should be faster with the G4 to do conversions but have not yet tried.
In fairness to OWC I should also let people know that their G4 500-600 MHz Zif upgrade is now listed as being the same 7410 LE nitro chip as the Daystar/XLR8 upgrade. It is often hard to know where facts end and marketing takes over an runs over the facts and specs . Daystar claims theirs runs cooler and makes better use of Altivec in OSX then what others are selling. It is true that the Daystar version can be bought from Daystar or the fine folks at macgurus.com for $199.00 and comes with the very nice Daystar/XlR8 cache software which cuts startup times by nearly half in OSX and the OWC sells for $229.00 with no software. OWC also has the G4 450-533 Mhz Zif for $149.00 which is a great price. It is the older chip design so may run a bit warmer and unlike the other chip it would be running over clocked and not sure what speed it would be happy running in our machines.
I've had to down clock my setup to 531 MHz CPU @ 59 MHz bus with L2 cache running at 265.5 MHz still not too shabby. Reason for this OS 9.2.2 booted with scrambled screen to my surprise at the 540/60 bus speed which was fine in OSX both Jaguar and Panther. I don't seem to be able to write a short reply ;-) later Will S
