Scott,
The speed of your bus can not be changed with the
Sonnet cards. I believe that the Sonnet cards have a
fixed bus speed of 50 mhz. OWC shows a screenshot of
the bus speed here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/Framework.cfm?page=/Benchmarks/sonnet800/sonnet800.html
With a zif carrier, you can push the bus speed as high
as your hardware is capable of running. For example:
My S900 is running a 55 mhz bus speed while the zif in
the carrier card runs at 825 mhz.
Another advantage of the zif carrier is this:
As G3 zif speeds increase, you can sell the old zif
and buy a new one without having to replace the entire
daughtercard.
On the other hand, now that Sonnet has gotten the bugs
out of their cards with OS X, I might look again at
their G4 upgrades.
It's a tough decision. No matter what you do, your
S900 will feel like a new machine with a faster
upgrade.
Good luck.
George
