Just curious if anyone has successfully upgraded a C500 to 9.2.1 and still had the stock CD-Rom drive working. I lose mine when I do this. (BTW, I'm using the Os 9 helper courtesy of os9forever.com).

I am curious as to why you would want to run 9.2 on the C500. Our C600 is a happy camper at 9.1 From what I can tell on our newer machine all you get with 9.2 is extra System Folder baggage to allow for Classic Support inside OSX.

Here, What the Old World OS 9.2.1/9.2.2 people have to say on the subject.

"What are the benefits of installing 9.2.x?

Apple touted 9.2.1 as a minor update to 9.1 that added "better classic compatibility". However, the performance inprovements that were added in 9.2.x are clearly noticeable once you install it. In particular, the Finder is incredibly responsive, and Open Transport networking is vastly more stable. However, the four most important reasons for installing 9.2.x are:

1. Compatibility with ATI's latest drivers. ATI dropped support for OpenGL versions lower than 1.2.2. (9.1 has 1.2.1)

2. You can't run DVD Studio Pro 1.5 or 1.2.1 without 9.2.2.

3. You can't run Final Cut Pro 3 without 9.2.2.

4. Full compatibility with iPod."

I installed it for compatibility with my ATI Radeon 7000 Video card. So many odd bugs I wished I'd stayed with OS 9.1 which I'd used for a long time with no issues at all. No longer an issues as no longer use OS 9 except once a week or so I boot into OS 9 to archive my email . I 'd like to soon stop doing that. Need to figure out how to archive "mail" mail boxes.

To answer the question about SCSI CDrom drives. One needs to save a copy of whatever CDrom driver you are using before you do the OS upgrade. FWB driver still worked with OS 9.1 but you needed to turn off the cache setting in the control panel. Intech's Speedtools is best but as others say costs money. Also hacked Apple Cd drivers work.
OSX Apple drivers work fine with most CD drives including our clone drives. Will S
