oops, that went off before I was finished.. So if you have not installed another audio interface into your computer, that is the only choice you shall see in the control pane. The jack--that is, the physical port that accepts the 1/8th" [mini TRS] stereo plug--expects to see line level signal. Most mics would require some sort of pre-amp to work with this. The so-called PlainTalk mics have such circuitry built-in and can draw power from the input jack; they can be identified visually by their longer plug and broader ring. They are designed primarily for speech and not much for recording music. If that is all you need it for, one can still find them on Ebay. Otherwise, the iMic makes a lot of sense, since you'll find a lot more hardware that is compatible with it, and a lot more software, too. If you are looking to record music more than just casually, start thinking along the lines of PCI cards or even FireWire interfaces with break-out boxes that keep the a/d-d/a converters away from all the electrical noise inside the computer case.
