I'll be going inside my C500 soon and I'm wondering if I should replace the PRAM battery as preventive maintenance (I understand that when it dies, the computer won't boot up).
If the consensus is "yes," where might I get a replacement battery and how much trouble is involved?
Spence,
If the battery is four or five years old, it is probably near the end of its life expectancy. Changing it now, might save you some troubleshooting efforts in the future.
It is a 4.5v battery. The folks at Other World Computing sell them. If nothing else, take a look at their web site, so you know what the thing looks like, here: <http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=2525&Item=RAYMAC45V> You can usually find that battery at most major computer shops and places like RadioShack.
You will find battery replacement info here <http://home.earthlink.net/~supermac_insider/support/index.html> If you have never been inside your machine, you might find this page useful too <http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh/umax.shtml>
