"I'll be going inside my C500 soon and I'm wondering if I should replace the PRAM battery as preventive maintenance (I understand that when it dies, the computer won't boot up).
If the consensus is "yes," where might I get a replacement battery and how much trouble is involved?"
If the battery has not been changed in a few years, I would definitely replace it. You can find a replacement at Radio Shack, but can find a much better deal at Other World Computing (www.macsales.com). As I recall, you'll have to remove the case cover and the hard drive to access the battery. Not really serious surgery, but will take you a few minutes. Once you've made it this far, it's a piece of cake to replace the battery. My two cents worth, anyway.
