The grease should be applied sparringly- it spreads with heat. It sounds more like there isn't a firm contact between the chip and the heat sink- something isn't seated well. Some heat sinks use clips, and these have to pull the heat sink into firm contact with the chip or it will overheat.

Hi Everyone.
I put a G3 300 in one of my S900 and it freezes during start up or shortly thereafter. The heat sink-I think that is what it is- gets very hot to the touch. Could it be that there is something missing or maybe not enough of the grease between the processor and the top part? Is the top part called the heat sink? When I remove the Zif carrier card and put the original 250 unit back in it starts up fine. I have a 4 GB Hard Drive, 168 megs of ram, the original CD unit, a USB card and OS9.1 Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks
Jacqueline
