I used to have problems with ethernet on my J-700. I broke down and bought a Asante PCI card for it, installed the drivers, and it worked fine. I later discovered the original was not the built-in ethernet port, but, rather, when I was installing OS 9.1, not all the ethernet extensions got loaded into the system folder. Check the system folder in your install disk and make sure that the disk is installing all the proper extensions. I ended up installing all of them:
Apple Enet* Apple Enet DLPI Support* EnetshimLib* Apple Ethernet CS Apple Ethernet CSII Apple Ethernet LC Apple Ethernet NB Apple Built-In Ethernet Ethertalk 2
While I am quite certain I don't need all of these in my SuperMac, I installed anyway. I would guess that I could take them out one by one and see which one(s) are really necessary. Actually I have an upgraded Power Tower Pro with only the *extensions installed and it works great. Hope this helps.
