My answer to this is the same - go with DiskWarrior.
I just ordered the latest version (for X) as an upgrade from the ver. 2.xx I've been using for maintaining my 9.1 system (and will work in up to 9.2).
Bad news is Disk Optimizer is no longer included, which is similar to Norton's Speed Disk.
As for partitioning, this is not encouraged in X, or at least that's my impression.
I never bothered with it when I took the leap directly to Panther from OS 9.1.
If you need something like a scratch disk, I would dedicate an entire volume to it, internally or using an external firewire drive.
My s900's System folder ran happily in its 2 gb partition of a 9 gb UW drive for many years and that's where it still resides.
Another 2 gb partition held all applications and utilities.
A 2 gb partition was for the scratch disk.
A separate 60 gb IDE drive in three partitions held various photoshop files and documents.
From my experience, a hard drive will require periodic fresh start via reformatting as it gets older and tired.
And DiskWarrior has been able to repair problems Norton couldn't, but to be fair, some folks have reported vise-versa.
Disk Warrior is the best money I spent for a legal copy of a software.
And I gladly paid for the upgrade to the current version, which I hope to see in the next day or so.
