So what is available, what vendors are reputable, etc.? What is a good price?

Current controllers are going for between $60 - $100.
You probably want a ATA 66 card such as the old Sonnet Tempo, no longer available if I'm not mistaken.
Current models are Ultra ATA 133/100, which will also handle the older drives.
(There's also the latest Serial ATA).

There may be two options for you;
1. Get a Ultra ATA card with plans on getting a decent size ATA drive for the s900 after you take care of the old 2 gb drive.
2. Get a firewire card for the s900 and invest in a firewire enclosure, which you can use to retrieve the data from the 2gb drive. When you're done, plop in a new ATA drive and you now have an external firewire drive which can be used with any firewire equipped Mac.

I bought a Firewire 800/400/USB 2.0 enclosure from OWC and plopped in a 7200 rpm 160 gb Seagate drive. It was very very easy.

I like #2 better.
