Just a suggestion, but I ran Netscape 4.8 in OS 9.1 with very good stability.
I believe 4.8 is the most recent of the free version ?
As for AIM, just turn off the extension or better yet, trash them.
Also, try running a disk utility such as DiskWarrior.
