This is one thing I miss about OS-9 - being able to duplicate system folders onto other volumes or backup drives.
Yes, I think that was one of the best and most missed features of the old Classic Mac.
In X, which parts of a HD content needs to be dragged over to a volume I wish to make bootable in OS-X ?
Notice from my tone above that this is a missing feature in OSX ? :-( So the answer is it really can't be done. OSX like all UNIX has many hidden (invisible) files on the hard disk. It also follows pathways to find files. In OS 9/8 you can pretty much move a file or app anywhere you want to and just like magic the Mac OS will find and open the needed file . In OSX it follows a path and when the file isn't where it expects it to be your out of luck.

I see System, Library and also within Users there is a Library. Would also like to drag over a handful of Applications.

Some apps can be dragged over and others will need to be installed. There are clues as to which is which. If when installing the app you open a dmg (image) file and drag the app to the application folder and your done installing. These apps can be easily moved by dragging a copy . Apps that are installed by running an installer program (which includes most Apple apps) can not generally be moved as you will be missing the hidden files.
Now there are a number of apps (Tinker tools, Cocktail & OnyX come to mind) which let you turn on show hidden files. So in theory you could then find and move all these hidden files and all would be well. All it takes is one out of place or missing and your out of luck. Turn on hidden files and you will be amazed at just how many files are hidden and located all over the place. Suddenly your hard drive looks like you installed Linux!
Lucky for us there is an easier way to do it. Get a copy of "Carbon Copy Cloner" it is non crippled $5.00 shareware find using Google or at www.versiontracker.com . It does all the work for you.
I have a firewire drive that bascially mirros the contents of the internal and is bootable.
I wish to resurrect a older G4 (Digital Audio model) and so far my attempts to duplicate my setup hasn't been successful.

Attempt 1 - booted from the firewire drive and tried to copy its contents to the G4 internal - no dice.
Booted from the internal (into 9.2) and after acquriing the firewire drive, copied over the various folders. The startup disk control panel shows the bootable OS-X system folder but machine will not go past the initial screen and there is no 'activity wheel'.

Best of luck Will S
