Thanks JAY for your response to my dilemma.
The reason for my concern was when I was going to up date to 8.5 (then 8.6) I
got this message and others at the time that said I should update to 9.1.

OK now I can go to 9.1.
What does he mean by the "Apple pieces get replaced"

By going direct to 9.1, I do not have to worry about the concerns below, and
many more I got, when I asked about going to 8.5 about drivers and CD ROMs.

"Arnie you're doing great! You're running OS 8.1 but want to move to OS
8.6 so that a new printer (and requesite PCI-slot USB card) is
compatible. The issue is that when upgrading the OS, the CDROM driver
gets upgraded too, replacing whatever you have been using previously. If
that means the newer CDROM driver can't make your CDROM drive function
you won't have use of it.

With the exception of System 7.6, no standard version of the Mac OS
works with a non-Apple CDROM drive. Hence the suggestions to either
find other software that can still be used with your CDROM or get an
Apple-brand (known as Apple "ROMmed") CDROM.

>How do I find out what CDROM driver I have?

Launch your Extensions Manager (Apple Menu>Control Panels>Extension
Manager)

The Extensions Manager can tell you what version of what CDROM driver
you're using. Play around with it; you'll see something about FWB if
using that. An "X" mark indicates enabled items.

If you have a working CDROM now, there is probably little reason to
replace it or even get new software, I'd wager. My guess is your
existing CDROM software will work with 8.6, "certified" or not.

What happens is that when you upgrade the OS, all the new pieces either
replace the old or disable them. The main Apple-pieces will get
replaced but if you're using a third-party CDROM driver such as FWB
it'll most likely remain but either be disabled or enabled
simultaneously with OS 8.6's CD/DVDROM driver (which effectively
renders the FWB useless.)

As long as you still have the FWB pieces, you can go back an enable or
re-install them, DISABLE the new Apple CD/DVDROM extension that comes
with 8.5/8.6, restart and be "good to go." Maybe:)

Or, when the time comes I can email you Apple's CDROM extension that
came with System 7.6. It seems to work fine under 8.6 for me.
