Well, I figured out part of the problem. The Acard that I just bought, an
ATA133 card, shows up on my computer as an Ultratek 66.
Agree with Jeff here. Need to use the cuda button to flush old NVRAM info . I'm betting this is the info from your old card.
It recognizes 238
gigs of the 250 gig hard drive. (which it shouldn't do if it was really a
66, right? It should only recognize 137 gigs of it?)

Another marketing gimmick(& dishonest IMHO but all hard drive companies do it) as far as your drive showing up as 238GB rather then 250GB. For the purpose of selling you the drive they come up with the 250GB number by using 1000MB = 1GB. However nearly all computer OS's use 1024 MB = 1GB !! So that is where most of the drive shrinkage occurs. Formating the drive also takes some space but a fairly small amount . I don't remember the exact size and it varies a bit with different formating apps.
But It won't let me
install Panther unless I do the 8 gig partition thing. Does this have
something to do with the PCI bridge and the fact that I have the card in a
lower slot?

No, as Jeff said the Acard's should work in any slot. The 8 GB partition is likely caused by the card being seen as the Ultratek 66 as this is the VST/promise card which does have this limitation. So clearing out the NVRAM should take care of this issue. The 8 GB limit can also occur for one other reason with an Acard ATA card. When using the card on an Old world Mac you must boot into OS 9 to format the new hard drive before using it. If you format the drive using OSX utilities you get the 8 GB limit for doing the install. or in some cases you can't install at all this varies from setup to setup. You then end up with error message after doing the install . As far as I know it may let you do the install on a 8 GB partition but I don't remember any reports of it booting after the install. The openfirmware messages you mention in the other message seem to be a Panther on Old machines issue. I saw it with Panther but here also clearing the NVRAM fixed it. Best of luck and let us know how it goes. These are small potholes in the road. You should be able to get this working. later Will S
Well, I've got Jag going on another drive and it's been stable for a
while. I don't really need Panther. I just thought if I could install it
without the 8 gig limitation, I'd be better off.
