Hi,

This is a follow-up to my last post re: the error message I've been getting
when using a feature of Flash (an animation program) which involves writing
to the disk. The message is... There is a problem with the disk <name>. Some
information may have been lost. Check recently used files for missing data
and use a disk-repair utility on the disk.

No one else has answered so I'll give it a go. I don't have an answer but perhaps I can supply some clues that may help. Disk Warrior utility is what I recommend you use when getting any sort of error message on a Mac . It will repair most problems.

snips taken:
I installed the
new drive (WG Caviar SE EIDE 120 GB 7200 8Mb attached to a SIIG Ultra ATA
133/100 Controller in the top PCI slot of an S900 running OS 9.2.2 w/ 1GB
RAM and a G4 450Mhz processor) and still get the same message. Finally I
decided to back up the data on my original 2GB SCSI that came w/ the
computer, re-initialize it and install OS9.xx and Flash and all my Flash
files on it. The program works flawlessly and I DO NOT get the error
message, but if If I try to work on any Flash files stored on the IDE drive,
I get the error message.

So It seems to be a hardware problem specific to the IDE drive and/or the
controller card. Someone I spoke w/ thought maybe the card was defective or
possibly the I/O of the configuration was too fast for my logic baoard or
maybe the card was not working properly w/ the IDE drive. As I understand I
can't relocate the card to any of the bottom four PCI slots because of PCI
to PCI bridge problems (which I forget what they were). Any ideas as to what
to do , short of buying a new computer. Or should I consider buying a modest
sized SCSI (appreciably bigger than my 2GB) to give me the performance I
need and use the IDE for backup and storage although I hate the idea of
using a device that is unreliable in some areas of performance. Any feedback
will be very much appreciated. I am so frustrated at this point. Thanks.

Elliot
The SIIG ATA card (made by Acard) can be used in any PCI slot in your S900 machine. Sonnet ATA 100 & 133 cards are limited to the top two slots but not your SIIG card. Western Digital Hard drives use a slightly different jumper pin setup then most other hard drives. This can and sometimes does cause issues until the pins are adjusted correctly for your setup. ide hard drives have Master and slave settings for using more then one drive on an ide bus/ cable. If your only running one drive it would normally be set to Master and the drive on the end of the cable and not the middle plug. Western digital has a " single drive" pin setting for running one drive by it's self. Using the Master setting for one drive can cause problems as can using the middle plug rather then the end plug. Drives may work ok at times when setup wrong. This can make it difficult to find the issue when it works ok sometimes. The drive also most likely has cable select pin setting. When this is used a drive on the middle ide cable plug will be slave and when at the end of the cable/ plug Master.
Have you tried putting a Mac OS on the new drive to see if that works better then having the OS on a separate SCIS drive? Your machine would also run faster using the IDE drive for the OS. Hope some of this helps best of luck. Will S
