seems more likely to me that the floppy is corrupted. are you sure it
still works in a win/tel box? also, the drives themselves are
susceptible to spotty performance if they are old and full of dust.
top any PC formatted 1.4 MB floppy disk. My S900 with OS 9.1 and the
original floppy drive will not, giving the error message: "This disk is
unreadable by this computer." Who is right?

You are correct. Since 1989 the Mac has been able to do this automatically
using the control panel "file exchange". Check to see if this Control
panel has been inactivated or perhaps corrupted.
