adrian,

i have a powerbook G3/233 (wallstreet), and it is only a little slower (running OS 9) than my S900 which has a metabox G4/400, 768MB, and two 9GB quantum atlas V (LVD-SCSI) drives. the processor is a little slower, but the bus speed is a little faster (67MHz vs 50 MHz) and that kinda equals out. i have an apple (quantum) 30GB HD (IDE) in the wallstreet, and that can't compete with the LVD drives, which each have 8MB of onboard cache. and this wallstreet can only take a max of two memory sticks, which currently limits you to 512MB of RAM (as far as i know). there are processor upgrades available for the wallstreet up to G4/500 (that i know of). anything more recent than the wallstreet powerbooks will be that much faster and handle more RAM, but if you can live with the RAM limit, you can probably pick up a wallstreet for a song.

you didn't mention what OS you're using, but the wallstreets will natively support OSX up to 10.2 (jaguar) without having to use a hack (e.g., XPostFacto) to install.

that's all i can think of right now. oh, the very early wallstreets running at 233MHz did not have any L2 backside cache. the ones without the cache are model # M3553 (i think). the later ones with the backside cache are model # M4xxx. the powerbooks running above 233MHz all have L2 cache.

that's my opinion, FWIW, and if i have made any errors in the technical specs, i hope the more knowledgable members of this list will post corrections

john
