Please try the following:
- check the Account Settings, Server Settings whether "Check for new messages at startup" is active
- check whether File > Get New Messages works per account
- open Tools > Web Development > Error Console and post anything suspicious here (you can use Copy from each entry's context menu)
- check if it works with a new profile
