211 - the NNTP response code for "newsgroup selected ok"
37385 - an estimate of the number of articles in the group
2 - the article number of the oldest post
37386 - the article number of the youngest post
That's all the info that's available from the server. Servers don't do
much to make sure the estimate is right; if you've been downloading
messages from the start, your 37227 is probably much closer to correct.
Some of the article numbers in the range 2 - 37386 aren't associated
with posts. A server hiccup can cause an empty slot. Also, an empty
slot is created whenever a post is cancelled, and cancellations
probably account for most of them.
Two messages to this group have been cancelled under the cancellation
policy <http://www.mozilla.org/community/cancellation.html>, some spam
has been cancelled, and for a while there was a troll who had all his
posts cancelled as soon as he made them.

The only way to know is to download and count them all. Have fun. ;)
