Although you didn't ask for this solution, yet, Laurie, to clean out your "Sent" folder, under your Local Folders, create several sub-folders, 2006-Sent, 2007-Sent, etc, and move the messages from the "Sent" folder into these folders.
Do likewise for your "Inbox" so that your active mail profile is as trim as possible.
