I just downloaded& installed Seamonkey 2.0 and my current profile
from 1.8.1.1 ( I think was the latest I had installed ) is missing,
doesnt even show up as an option I can switch to anymore. How can I
get that back, please?

Correction, I had 1.1.18 installed and just installed 2.0.

I found out what appears to have happened.

It looks like it installed 2.0 separately on my computer, so I can run
2.0 and not find my old profile, or I can still run 1.1.18 using a
different start icon.

This is weird.

And with 1.1.18 I have just the browser installed, but 2.0 seems to have
gone and installed everything, which I didn't want.

Can I delete this 2.0 install and go get JUST the browser for 2.0 and
install it instead of 1.1.18 and use my existing profile?

Okay, SeaMonkey 2.0 looks for its profile in a completely different location then SM 1.1.18. What is supposed to happen is that when you run SM 2.0 for the first time, you get a migration wizard, that copies your profile data from the 1.1.18 location, and uses it to create a new profile in the 2.0 location.

Did you get such a wizard? When you open 2.0, does it open with your old bookmarks, for example?

The SeaMonkey 2.0 Profile Manager will not show profiles in the 1.1.18 location. However, that profile was not removed. If you still have 1.1.18 installed, it will still open with the old profile, as you have seen.

Sm 2.0 has no option to install just the browser. That was a holdover from the old Mozilla suite. The assumption now is that if you download a suite, you want a suite, not just a browser. If you want just a browser, why not use Firefox? However, there are workarounds that will allow you to use just the browser, and ignore Mail/News, though it will still be installed.

The answer to your last question then, is no. Sm 2.0 will install the entire suite. You get Browser, Mail/News/Composer/IRC Chat, whether you want them or not. The theory is, if you just want the Browser, get Firefox. It will migrate the profile to the new location and use that. SM 2.0 is a very different and improved product, there is a lot in your old profile that will simply mean nothing to the new application.

Take a good look at the release notes:

To use another mail client with SM 2.0, try the following:

Type about:config in the browser's Location Bar.

Click through the "warranty" warning

Right-click in the grid and choose New >> Boolean.

Type network.protocol-handler.external.mailto for the name and true for the value.

That should allow SM to use your default email client.

I hope all of this works for you. For my own knowledge, why is it that you would install just the Browser? On the face of it, it seems like ordering a BLT without the lettuce and Tomato. ;) Here, installing the suite, but hold the suite part?

Why not just install Firefox? I am sure you have your reasons, but if you can tell me, it will enable me to help others in the same situation.
