Lee, it sounds like you've nailed exactly what was happening; I thought
the software would pick up the subject line for the thread. That
obviously didn't happen.
So I'm still left wondering if there is a way to properly respond to the
mailing list digest mirror [or whatever it is]. If there is not then
why is it made available? It would seem rather strange if I were the
only person to ever responded here from the mailing list mirror [or
whatever].
Thanks,
James
Many people have subscribed to the mailing lists, and there have been
various eccentricities that have come up, though not as involved as
yours. What I have not seen is digest users replying and having these
sorts of problems.
The mailing list was established to broaden the usage options for the
support groups. While newsgroups are an ideal venue for support of this
kind, many new users of the internet are unaware of how they can be
used. However, even the most inexpert user understands email, at least
to a point. So a user who doesn't even know that newsgroups exist can
subscribe to a mailing list, and be able to reach help.
The big problem with the mailing list mirror is the volume.
Particularly when a major new version is released, as recently with
SeaMonkey, there can be a couple of hundred posts in a day, really
clogging a users inbox.
The digest solves that, by sending one email with all the posts in a
specified period. Yet replying to one of those posts has obviously
caused a problem.
The best answer, as we have found is to use the newsgroup interface for
which it was designed. Here we have the happy result, and I hope we can
continue to help you with any problems you have. When you have time,
read through the other posts in the group, its amazing what you can
learn about the application.
