I may be wrong about this, but the only 'keep for so many days' option I know is on the server. I have the same setup on multiple machines so in order that I get all wanted mails on all of the machines, I have things set up to keep for 60 days or until deleted.
If that is your problem and the mails are no longer shown, I suspect they are gone.
