Well, one difference is that many people nowdays don't use any desktop
email client any more (either they use webmail or just social networking
messages or instant mesaging of some sort), and surely don't use
newsgroups at all. Times change, strangely.

I don't use Facebook or twitter too dangerous. worse than JavaScript or
Active-X. There are reports every other day where user personal info has
been compromised on both even though people setup properly.
I use news groups or software forums. I don't ven use AOL Instant
Messenger or Apple's equivelent any more its not secure either.
