Have you tried changing your font settings for plain text? Specifically for emails, there is Edit -> Preferences -> Mail and Newsgroups -> View Messages (IIRC because my SM is in French!) where you can switch between fixed width and variable width (I prefer variable, but you might not). But in SM in general, there is -> Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance (?) -> Fonts where there is a lot to play with.
