I use Seamonkey 2 the same way you do (on Win2000) and have the same problem, only my default email is Thunderbird. I think it's basically a Seamonkey problem and unless the developers choose to proactively correct it, you are stuck with the situation. The one thing I do as an ersatz fix is to have Thunderbird open. If the default email program is open, then SM will invoke it.
