I upgraded from 1.1.18 to 2.03 about 3 weeks ago, then to 2.04.I just
noticed most of my folders are missing all but one of their messages.
Some folders had hundreds of messages. My wife also just noticed she
had many missing messages (she's on a different computer - both using
XP). I've deleted my msf files, but that didn't change anything.

My profile is 950 mb; my backup from 1.1.18, just before I
installed SM 2.03, has 1050 mb. So, it seems like they might
still be there. So, how do I get the messages to show up in the
folders so I can access them?

Have you got your "View->Messages" set to All??

Yes, it is, but it's not a problem of viewing messages that are there.
The folder count in most of my 100 or so folders is only 1, or 0, when
the count should be as much 400 or 500 in some of them. Searching for
messages doesn't find any of the old ones that should be present, only
the ones that show in the folder count.

It's the 2000 or so older messages that are missing - the only
messages older than Jan. 22, 2010 are in the Junk or Template folders
(about 10 messages). All newer messages appear to be there, but I'm
not certain of that. So, I'm thinking it's an indexing problem, but I
don't know how to fix that.

try shutting down SM and open the profile then open mail folder
(Directory) and throw all the .msf file in trash and empty. (all of
them).

Now open SM and go to each email folder. see if they show up.

Closing SM, deleting all the msf files, then opening SM was the first
thing I tried. I just redid that, with no change in the number of
messages; currently, it's 2950 in the trash, 350 elsewhere.

More info: using SM 2.03 on my laptop, I copied to it the last desktop
profile under 1.1.18 (the backup copy made just before installing 2.03
on the desktop). All my old messages seem to be there; at least, a
search show 4448 (including 3000 in Trash).

I'm concerned about two things:

1) How to restore the old messages to my desktop
2) Preventing a problem like this in the future

Any ideas?

Well, regarding #1, I would copy the Mail folder--the entire folder--from
your laptop SM 2.0.3 profile, and paste into your SM 2.0.4 desktop profile.
This *will not* erase anything already in your desktop Mail folder, but
*will* add any missing items between the laptop and desktop profiles. (Note:
I did this myself regularly between SM 2 and 1.1.18 when I was still using
the latter for mail while a few kinks were worked out of the former.)

Regarding #2, no good answer, here. The circumstances of the glitch are
strange, to say the least, so I'm flummoxed as to what may have caused
the problem--other than a botched profile transfer by SM 2.0.3 when upgrading
from 1.1.18. However, as far as safeguarding your Mail folder messages
generally speaking, that's what regular backups are for. ;-D

Purrs and hope this helps --
