While I don't have an answer to your specific question, I will pass on
this which has been effective for me.
I created a "file sync" backup process for my profile folder. Since
"sync" means that only files that have changed since the last sync are
copied, it made a huge difference in sync time to create date specific
subfolders for all of the folders containing a lot of messages such as
the sent folder, then move messages into those folders and finally
compact all folders and sync... first time takes a while (currently
seven years of messages) but subsequent syncs take far less time.
Related to this, dividing the messages up reduces the impact of a
corruption such as yours.
