While that would be a consideration if SM were still in use and accessible, since SM is "dead in the water" there is no reason not to kill the process if there has been an interval since it was used.

fwiw, I have needed to kill SM in taskmanger for many years and have not experienced any corruption.

The other point to consider is to see if "quick launch" is still running. If so, exit from the tray icon and see if it removes the task manager entry.
