I checked in 'about:config' but didn't see anything (at least that I
recognize) that will force SeaMonkey to ask for a user name as well as
a password for a news server. I also looked in the prefs.js of a an
older comp that I properly setup many, many years ago but can't
remember what I did to get it to work.

The password prompt is automatic of course but it never asks for a
user name so I am unable to log onto my news server.

No doubt this is covered somewhere but darned if I can find it.

Trying to set up version 2.0.11 on a new XP build.

Thanks,

I think you may need to add a new mail & newsgroup account with the
correct identity information?

Your_Name > Your_Email_Address > Newsgroup_server
This, I think, is where the identity submitted to the news-server is
generated from within SeaMonkey. HTH. Barry

Went back and followed your advice to the letter and it worked, thanks!

I must say that its counterintuitive to set up things in manner that puts your comp at risk just to log onto a news server the first time. Then have to turn around and go back and change things to protect yourself. I have used Mozilla (then called Netscape) since before Internet Explorer even existed or for that matter the Internet was used outside of government and colleges. I guess you could call me a creature of habit.

Thanks for the info,
John
