This is the easiest way, doesn't require creating desktop shortcuts or
changing desktop icons.

I agree, this is the easiest method to select which application will open at launch. However, if the owner would like to have the options of opening the browser, or mail at launch both methods will need to be employed. The browser or e-mail at launch from "Preferences", and the browser or e-mail from the command line. This permits maximum flexability a SM launch.

The problem with the "Preferences" only is that we get either mail, or browser, or both at launch. We cannot get one and then the other, we cannot set which has precedence over the other. This is not a bug, it has been with us since Communicator 4.1.
