Well, as far as IRC goes, if I'm not mistaken, it's used by some programmers to interact. So far as it's used to push programming forward, I can't blame them for giving it priority. Plus, such a module has been available for years. Discontinuing it all of a sudden would not make any more sense than discontinuing the composer function, or the mail one.

As far as RSS goes, I guess it's a matter of demand. It's definitely useful and I am glad they implemented it sooner than later. Again, it makes life easier for a lot of people. It's direct value added for SM. I wouldn't say the same about your reply-forward example, which is a minor "problem" that only bothers a few people and already has a workaround.
