Interviewed by CNN on 26/04/2011 12:18, [email protected] told the world: > I don't understand why anyone bothers with gmail > or hotmail or yahoomail when it is so cheap to buy > your own Web domain with E-mail (incl. Web mail).
Well, registering the domain is cheap, yes. I did that a couple years ago and gave away customized domain e-mail accounts to all my family. The yearly registration fee costs less than two movie tickets. However, HOSTING might not be that cheap. And maintaining your own server could be just too much trouble. I have my custom domain, but it's hosted in Google Apps (gratis for up to 50 accounts), with the authoritative DNS (the only key part Google does not supply) hosted on web-dns.co.uk (also gratis). For now it is serving my purposes. If Google starts being too cumbersome, I'll just pick up my domain and move. It's Gmail in everything but the domain name. And consider that I'm no fan of webmail -- in fact, there's several things about Gmail that I dislike, almost all of them related to the fact that it's designed primarily to be a webmail server, not a POP or IMAP server. The only saving grace of Gmail, for my personal use, is that it has acceptable (not really good, but acceptable) IMAP4 support and forwarding. -- MCBastos This message has been protected with the 2ROT13 algorithm.
