It's always done it for me and I've used that exact process on a dozen
computers at work, over a year ago. Everything works fine as long as the
whole folder is copied. Just make sure you have the same version of SM
on both computers. Also,on the new one, check that you don't already
have a profile or it might get deleted (I'm not sure, but I wouldn't try
it anyway).
I know you can also use Mozbackup for this, but I've never used it
myself, so I can't really comment.

about the profile location, the profile manager can be used to switch
between the default one and the other, what ever the name you give,
that's what I did - all fine
