Here is some more data.
In SM, when I click this link (it's a moving graphic of the building of
the international space station) I get a message saying I need to
install the latest Flash player. So I download it and then close SM,
install the player.
Reopen SM and try the link again. I get the same warning as if it does
not recognize the AF player I just installed.

However the link does work in IE on same laptop.
WinXP
SM 2.0.14

Works fine with SM2.1b3, using Flash Player 10.2, maybe you need to
install Shockwave ( http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/ ) besides of Flash
Player.

I have both, doesn't matter, site still refuses.

I'm assuming this is one of those stupid websites that requires an ActiveX control, forcing use of Internet Exploiter. Not that they couldn't display the content without the control.

Some sites don't know how to sniff for the Flash Player, return erroneous version numbers, etc. It's not the OP's fault.
