Probably not that much smaller -- it's a pretty substantial change (new Gecko version, new bookmarks engine, a lot of other new stuff...). Probably the easiest way to do the upgrade is to pack the entire full installer into the update. (I noticed that, in Firefox, if the update is anything larger than the latest maintenance patch, the update engine downloads the full release)

In fact, based on past experiences with Firefox, I wouldn't be surprised if the auto-update ends up being *larger* than the full release. Apparently the auto-update system uses a lesser form of file compression than the full releases...
