Eventually I'll have to upgrade, but before I do, I really need to
know how to retrieve and reactivate bookmarks and the password manager
and so on.

Using OSX 10.6.8 when I updated from 2.0.14 I had the same problem. I made
a copy of the html file from the 2.0.14 profile put it on my desktop then
imported it into 2.4.0 password manager. May be other ways to successfully
import but this worked for me.

What is the full name of "the html file" you refer to? And where can I
find it?

Also, where do I find my bookmarks again? I understand the concept of
dragging files to the desktop and re-inserting them, but I'm not sure
which files to drag out.

I really appreciate your help on this.

To prevent unwanted upgrade go to Preferences/Advanced/Software
Installation and Uncheck 'Allow websites to install updates' and
'Automatically check for updates'

I'd always had it checked like that, and thus never had an involuntary
installation—until this time. It must have come pre-checked in the
"upgrade" to 2.4 that went so badly.

Profile in SM 2.0.14

Users/Library/Mozilla/Profiles/Default/bookmarks.html

You now should be able to import this file from the Bookmarks Manager; Browser/Bookmarks/Manage Bookmarks/Tools/Import HTML

If this doesn't work open the html folder and highlight your bookmarks, copy and paste them into the appropriate folder, e.g Bookmarks Toolbar & Bookmarks Menu.

Profile in later versions are not stored in the same place but stored in the Application Support folder;

Users/Library/Application Support/SeaMonkey/Profiles/Default folder

Good luck! M
