I think yes! Select the folder in question, right-click, choose Properties, then the Retention Policy tab. Pick your poison.

AFAIK, this has been a feature for many versions. Same in Thunderbird as well.

If you want to absolutely remove emails that you have marked for
deletion, then yes, delete the email and then on the page at
Edit->Preferences->Mail& Newsgroups->Network&Storage, set the setting
for Disk Space to a reasonable small value, 0.1 maybe.

Rather than that rather dangerous move, do the same property setting for the Trash folder.

Of course, one should still Compact Folders periodically, and manually in my opinion.
