Many listserve emails are delivered in HTML via SMTP with no problems 
whatsoever.
This makes emails (see freecycle via Yahoo) interactive (see 'go to top').
It makes emails "pretty" according to some.

Frankly, the "universe" does not care and does not agree with you.
