email account password

Using SM 1.1.19. I am trying to set up an additional email account. 
Somehow in the account set-up process, it doesn't ask for a password, 
but then when I try to access the account, SM wants a password. 
Sometimes I get a message saying "enter the new password," or something 
like that, so I do but it won't accept it. This makes no sense to me. 
Any help would be appreciated.
