Interviewed by CNN on 28/02/2012 18:32, TMitchell told the world: > Is there any difference or advantage between updating SM via the update > option within the program itself versus going to the website and > downloading the complete new version and installing it over the older one?
Well, if you were running the latest version before this new release, the update is a smaller download and usually faster. It's also easier for a non-technical user. That's pretty much the advantages of the automatic update. IN THEORY, downloading the full installer and installing over the existing version is pretty much the same as running the auto-update (in fact, sometimes the "patch" download fails and Seamonkey proceeds to download the full installer). As you can see from some of the other responses to your query, some people prefer taking it further and doing all sorts of extra precautions. Personally, I don't see the need in the case of final release versions -- in my experience, the update is very smooth. I did take a bit of extra care when we were talking about a major change (like from 1.1.x to 2.0, or 2.0 to 2.1) -- mostly by backing up my profile and *reading the damn Release Notes and following the instructions*. But backing up is ALWAYS a good idea... However, if you are running pre-release versions (Nightly/Aurora/Beta), those precautions are good advice indeed. -- MCBastos This message has been protected with the 2ROT13 algorithm.
