Interviewed by CNN on 28/02/2012 17:18, Francesco Presel told the world: > I have just been forced to kill and restart SeaMonkey after it ate up > most of my memory. > Today, I have opened far more many tabs than usual (I usually have 5-6 > at a time maximum, but I had to do some image researches on the web and > to keep many results open at the same time). > Every now and then, I closed all those extra tabs, opened some new, ..., > and in the meantime the computer got slower and slower. > > I finally closed all tabs but 6, but the computer was still slow; from > the system monitor it came out that SM was using 2.6 GB of memory! > After restarting and restoring the same 6 tabs, it was using just 300MB > of memory (which is what SM uses on average on my computer). So, what > were the other 2.3 GB used for? It looks as if SM does not properly > deallocate memory when tabs are closed
Yeah, Mozilla products had a bit of a tarnished reputation as memory hogs. But this is not being ignored. There's a team at Mozilla working hard to reduce memory usage and leaks in Firefox. Much of their work directly benefits other Gecko products, like Seamonkey. And I expect the Seamonkey team is listening to the recommendations of the MemShrink team to improve things on their end, too. Firefox went from "wasteful" to "thrifty" over the last year, and it's still improving. But some things came up in the investigation. One of them is that several extensions are responsible for massive leaks. Recently, for instance, they publicly took McAfee to task, because the extensions their antivirus installed had GINORMOUS memory leaks. Mcafee listened and there's now an updated version of the extension that's much better (not really good, but acceptable). So, consider the hypothesis that one of the extensions you are using might be the source of the leak. (Just to note: Chrome fans used to go around claiming that Chrome is smaller and uses less memory than other browsers. It used to be so, but it's no longer true. Chrome nowadays is a larger download and uses more memory than Firefox.) -- MCBastos This message has been protected with the 2ROT13 algorithm.
