OK; have seen various comments concerning extra-large bookmarks and have
the following "solution" suggestion (or at least a start in that
direction).
Notice that WinDoze has various options for viewing a drive or folder;
relevant ones are List and Details.
These NEVER eat more than the space of one screen; they "gracefully"
scroll.
For some (like me), there would be a problem in that those are
ALPHABETICALLY SORTED lists; the "good" part is that one can "jump" to a
list group or name by typing in a "search term".
So, to keep both user types happy, keep the lists in USER ORDER and have
the "search term" act like a filter that would display only matching items.
As the search term is typed, less and less matching items would be seen.

FWIW, the various flavors of Windows behave somewhat differently with respect to sort order. In WinXP and earlier, you could define a default sort order and apply it to all folders, so for example, I used to have all folders set to sort in descending date order (newest first). Application dialogs that called Windows Explorer data behaved the same way, and you could re-sort those lists without affecting the WE default.

In Win7, however, there are several classes of folders, and they display differently. For example, folders classified by Windows as containing pictures may show thumbnails instead of details. Moreover, Win7 forgets the sort order and reverts to its default for that class of folders whenever you navigate to a different folder or close Windows Explorer. Fortunately, if you navigate to a folder through the "Libraries" virtual folder tree, Win7 does remember your display settings.
