Suspecting cookies, I restarted SeaMonkey and deleted all of the Google cookies, the restarted clean. That corrected the problem - at least so far - logged in or not. Still even if a cookie is mishandled by Google, which can result in the page not working. It should not cause system problems. The latter I can not explain. I will post further if the problem reoccurs.
