When I open SM, I have it set to open both Chatzilla and the Mail &
Newsgroup screens, and, even though the "Usenet" account is not
expanded, SM goes off and updates the messages in each of the (40-odd)
newsgroups.

Anybody think of a reason why one of my un-expanded news servers updates
the message counts but the other three news servers do not?? (Note:- I
would prefer *none* of them updated at this time!)

TIA

Under Edit | Mail & Newsgroup Settings, look for the account(s) that
is(are) updating. Expand each and you'll see a subfolder "Server
Settings." In that pane, you'll see:

[x] Check for new messages at startup
[x] Check for new messages every nn minutes

If either of these is checked, SM will check for new messages. If you
never want it to check without being explicitly told by you, clear both
checkboxes.

If you clear the first one but not the second, SM will wait after
startup until nn minutes have passed before checking for messages.

You may find that any change in these preferences takes effect only
after you restart SeaMonkey. That's the way it used to be, I haven't
checked lately.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Paul! I had the "check at start-up" checked.

Now just got to find the one-handed guy that ticked it, and slap him about a bit!! ;-)
